American Idol Michael Jackson Tribute Songs in Honor of MJ King of Pop

American Idol is doing a special tribute to Michael Jackson on Monday, June 29th at 8 p.m EST. in honor of the King of Pop who passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2009.

American Idol is re-airing the American Idol Season 8 Top 13 episode of Michael Jackson songs, originally aired on March 10, 2009 on FOX.

This was the first time that American Idol had done an entire evening of Michael Jackson’s music, and I’m very happy that Idol is doing this special in memory of MJ.

Gawd, I can’t believe Michael Jackson is dead. Here’s the list of songs that will be performed on Monday’s special tribute to Michael Jackson:

The news of Michael Jackson’s death sent shock waves around the world, with Jackson fans in complete shock and disbelief that the King of Pop has died. Michael Jackson was only two years older than me, and I grew up listening to MJ’s music from the time I was little. Our family used to watch the Jackson Five variety show on television when Michael Jackson and his siblings were little boys and girls (LaToya and Janet), and we’ve never wavered in our admiration and deep respect for the genius that is Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson fans are rushing to buy up as much Michael Jackson memorabilia as possible, and I don’t blame them one bit. I already have quite a lot of Michael Jackson music and the collection just keeps getting bigger. In my heart, Michael Jackson will live on forever not only as the King of Pop, but also someone who was born into the same family religion as I did.

If you ever watched the show on television years ago describing Michael Jackson’s early childhood and the abuse he suffered that was detailed in the story, you know what I’m referring to. I choose to remember Michael Jackson as not only the King of Pop, but also someone whose early childhood was very similar to my own – except for the music career part. Michael Jackson will never be forgotten.

Adam Lambert is singing A Change Is Gonna Come. Adam did a quick change and is wearing a light grey suit and looking good. The song performance was spectacular! Randy Jackson says “What you did right there, you can sing your face off and that was unbelievable”. Kara says the it was the best performance Adam has done, “combination of the high notes and low notes, using both sides of yourself”. Paula says Adam will be “iconic” and stands up to say “the best, the best, the best performance”. Simon Cowell says Adam Lambert is “100% back in the game…congratulations”. Great job Adam!

Kris Allen is up with “What’s Goin On” by Marvin Gaye, sitting on a stool playing guitar. Randy Jackson says “we’ve got ourselves a real live duel going on…just a little light for me man, ya know?” Kara says she’s glad Simon picked a “social conscience song, make them feel and make them change”. Paula says Kris “tore that song up and made Marvin Gaye proud”. Simon says Kris’ performance was like “three friends in their bedroom singing”.., adding Kris did not “grab hold of the song and too laid back for a night like this”. Uh Oh Kris! Simon Cowell says Adam Lambert won Round 2 “1 million percent for Adam”.

Round 3:

Adam Lambert is singing the Winner’s Coronation Song “No Boundaries“. WOW, WOW!!! Randy Jackson says “I’ve said it before I’ll say it again, you can sing anything.., you can sing the phone book, but not one of my performances, a bit pitchy for me in some spots”. Kara says she’s proud of Adam’s performance of the song she co-wrote. Paula says she’ll “be a fan forever, front line”. Simon Cowell says “you have been one of the best, original contestants on the show..I genuinely believe we have found a worldwide star in you”. Fabulous, spectacular performance by Adam Lambert tonight! (Problem is, Kara DioGuardi’s “No Boundaries” Lyrics SUCK! Very Kindergarten! Neither Adam nor Kris Allen should have to get stuck with this pathetic attempt of a song. Ick.)

Kris Allen is now singing the Winner’s Coronation Song “No Boundaries“. Kris is doing a great job, although sometimes appearing to strain to hit the higher notes. Randy Jackson says the song was a little too high for Kris. Kara DioGuardi says “I don’t want you to be judged on that song…you’ve been incredible to watch week after week…I hope people vote on the season”. Paula says “You should take it in…amazing job…I wish you the best of luck”. Simon Cowell says “I think the first song was your highlight…watching you tonight has been incredible…you have thoroughly deserved to be standing on this stage tonight, congratulations.”

Carrie Underwood closes the show with “Home Sweet Home” AKA “the boot song”.

UPDATE: Watch our LIVE American Idol Finale Adam Lambert vs Kris Allen Finale Showdown! The American Idol Finale on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 will be a real nail-biter, full of suspense to find out who will be the winner of American Idol 2009 Season 8. On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen will do their best to win your votes and become the crowned king of Season 8 on American Idol. Who will win American Idol Season 8 is anyone’s guess, but whoever wins the American Idol crown will have won due to having more votes than the other.

The official list of songs (spoilers) to be sung by Adam Lambert and Kris Allen haven’t been released, and typical American Idol Spoilers are often wrong until right after the American Idol Rehearsals are held and confirmed.

We do know that the American Idol Season 8 Finale will have three songs performed by the Top 2 Finalists, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. Kris Allen won the coin toss and chose to have Adam Lambert sing first during the final show, instead of the typical “pimp spot” Adam’s been used to. Kris Allen will sing last and close the show on Tuesday night.

UPDATE 1: Adam Lambert is going to sing Change Is Gonna Come and Adam’s Personal Song Choice is Mad World “with a little twist”. Kris Allen is seriously considering “Falling Slowly” (or “Heartless”, but leaning more towards Falling Slowly). But then again, maybe not! Newest spoiler rumors are that Kris Allen was NOT rehearsing either Falling Slowly nor Heartless! See what I mean about “spoilers”?

UPDATE 2: Kris Allen will sing “What’s Goin On” (by Marvin Gaye) “Ain’t No Sunshine” tonight on American Idol!

UPDATE 3: Steve Martin will be breaking out his banjo to perform a tune from his album of banjo music, according to ET Online. OMG!

UPDATE 4: ROD STEWART will be performing on tomorrow night’s American Idol Finale!!!

Round 1 – The Contestant’s Favorite – Favorite song of the season, according to Idol host Ryan Seacrest
Round 2 – Simon Fuller’s Pick – Previously chosen by Clive Davis last year
Round 3 – The Winner’s Single Coronation Song – Only one winner/coronation song called “No Boundaries” will be performed this year, apparently co-written by Idol Judge Kara DioGuardi

Next week’s finale at Nokia Theatre will include a lineup of talent including performances by past American Idol winners Carrie Underwood (Season 4) and David Cook (Season 7). Lionel Richie, Carlos Santana, Cyndi Lauper, Queen Latifah, Jason Mraz, Black Eyed Peas and Keith Urban are also among the artists scheduled to perform on Wednesday’s Finale before either Kris Allen or Adam Lambert is crowned the Season 8 winner.

Idol producers are trying to get as many Idol winners back for the Finale as humanly possible. Keith Urban will perform a duet with Kris Allen – Cyndi Lauper performs a duet with Allison Iraheta. Rumors across the net claim that Idol producers are trying to get David Bowie to sing a duet with Adam Lambert. Danny Gokey will duet with Lionel Richie and Santana will perform with all of the Idol contestants in attendance. Rumors are that Britney Spears will perform on American Idol but Perez Hilton says No she won’t.

UPDATE: Bad news: The David Bowie/Adam Lambert duet fell through. Darn it! That would have been very cool! Theres like a 5% chance it will happen so they are still working on someone to perform with Adam at the finale.

The American Idol 2009 Finale showdown can’t come soon enough for Idol fans, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen fans. Vote, Vote, Vote, Vote and Vote some more! Tonight’s American Idol Rat Pack theme brings back songs from the 5 original Rat Packs: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin and Joey Bishop., with “surprise” mentor Jamie Foxx appearing tonight on American Idol.

“THIS IS AMERICAN IDOL!” – The American Idol Finale is just 3 weeks away! Standards from the Rat Pack Era! “Mystery Mentor” Jamie Foxx is introduced with each of the Top 5 not having any idea who the mentor would be this week.

First to sing is KRIS ALLEN singing “The Way You Look Tonight”. Slow, mellow and smooth. Kris looks great in his suit too. Very nice job Kris! Randy Jackson says “this is your best performance…, nice!” Kara DioGuardi says Kris has “set the technical standards for this night”, and that Kris is a “dark horse in this competition”. Paula Abdul called Kris a “charismatic crooner”. Simon Cowell didn’t think the performance was that great, calling the performance “wet”, and doesn’t believe Kris Allen can possibly win this Season 8 competition. Kara says Allison likely earned some new fans tonight, and if this performance “doesn’t land you in the finals, I don’t know what will”. Paula says the performance was alluring and very tender. Simon Cowell asks Allison if she thinks she can win the competition and she of course does, but Simon says he feels she could be in trouble tonight. Uh Oh Allison!!! Simon says it “was the only believable, authentic song tonight” – saying Matt’s performance was “absolutely brilliant”. Kara says she’s been missing the Rat Pack Swagger and that Danny has it! “Unbelievable!” Paula simply says Danny’s performance was “stellar”. UPDATE BELOW!!! The American Idol Rat Pack theme list of songs spoiler rumors from EW may or may not be true, but it’s sure fun to speculate on American Idol spoilers anyway. One thing that’s interesting from this supposed spoiler is the lack of two songs for each of the Top 5 to sing this week.

Directly from an anonymous member of Ricky Minors band here are some real spoilers which came in fresh this morning. Remember: these songs are the pics the Idols made before any dressed rehearsal but they are the real deal. Matt: ‘Fly me to the moon’ (originally Megan’s pick, but Matt insisted). Danny: ‘That’s Amore’ (his second pick is ‘i’ve got you under my skin’). Allison: ‘Can’t Take That Away From Me’. She already sung it during previous rehearsals and will probably do this one on stage. Adam ‘Leroy Brown’ or ‘That’s Life’. ‘That’s life’, was originally claimed by Kris (so don’t act all surprised if Kris comes out on stage with this one). Kris has chosen ‘Fever’ his second choice ‘That’s life’ might also be sung by Adam. And finally the group performance will showcast Allison in a leading role as the female voice in ‘Something Stupid’. Remember during rehearsals things might change.

Jamie Foxx is scheduled to be a “surprise” Mentor on American Idol tonight. Big deal. Isn’t this the same Jamie Foxx who recently made some rather unkind comments about Miley Cyrus? THAT Jamie Foxx? Ugh….

Also, the most recent American Idol news is that there will NOT be TWO songs performed on Idol tonight by the Top 5, but only one song per contestant. Why doesn’t American Idol big-shots just do away with a bunch of this “mentor” nonsense and stop wasting viewer’s time and let the TOP 5 performers do what they do best?! SING!!! And, the judging needs to go back to just three judges – this 4 judge commenting nonsense eats up the entire hour of performances, which means there’s little time left between commercials and stupid Ford video commercials and Group Performances to actually watch the Idol finalists SING!

American Idol Rock Theme will most likely be next weeks’ theme on 5/5/09, since the Top 3 spot is typically reserved for home visits and producers/judges song choices for the Top 3 Finalists.

ETA: Chris Daughtry and band will be debuting their latest single on American Idol according to the band’s VLog, and even though a specific date is not mentioned, Rock Week seems like a very good bet.

Maybe, just maybe, we can all finally hear Allison Iraheta singing a Janis Joplin song like Piece of My Heart, if she’s not voted off American Idol this week. Come on Allison, show us what you’ve got vocally with a Janis Joplin song!

I can visualize Adam Lambert singing Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns and Roses, or Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones, or even Straight To Hell by The Clash.

I love American Idol Polls, don’t you? We introduced an American Idol voting poll where you can vote for your favorite American Idol season 8 contestant, and the results of the poll so far show Adam Lambert is in the top spot to be the next American Idol.

The New York Post recently reported all-too-obvious predictions that the odds of Adam Lambert winning this season’s Idol competition and becoming the next American Idol have become so strong that those placing bets will only receive 80 cents on every dollar placed in Adam’s direction.

“The talent show has seen some heavy favorites in the past but nothing quite like Lambert — who is running away from the field with seven other performers still in the running. Lambert has been out of the top spot only once so far in competition — when he stumbled during country music week — and briefly gave the betting lead to Danny Gokey. Gokey this week is holding steady as the second pick, with most bookmakers listing him at 5-to-2. Kris Allen is moving up among “Idol” bettors and is now the show’s No. 3 pick at around 7-to-1. Allison Iraheta had been the third pick for several weeks, but — after a lackluster performance last week — fell to the middle of the pack.”

American Idol 2009 is slowly but surely getting closer to deciding who will be the next American Idol, and even though the NYP article was posted prior to the American Idol Top 8 songs from the year you were born theme with Scott McIntyre being voted off, polls and vote results continue to show Adam Lambert is the one to beat in this competition.

Next week’s American Idol 4/14/09 theme, songs from the cinema/songs from the movies, should be very interesting and entertaining, as the Top 7 finalists perform songs of the cinema under the guidance of director Quentin Tarantino. Rest assured that the moment we learn of any American Idol Spoiler rumors of what songs the Idol contestant will sing, we’ll let you know right away.

American Idol predictions or speculation about which of the American Idol Top 7 will last long enough in the competition to be the Top 5 and Top 3 finalists are no where to be found online. Let’s change that, shall we?

The American Idol theme for March 31, 2009 will be “Top Downloads“, and by that we assume Top 100 iTunes downloads, according to news spreading around the net, ever since Idol host Ryan Seacrest announced the Top 9 Idol contestants will be singing songs from “top downloads”.

Past American Idol Season 7 champ, David Cook, will return to the Idol stage performing on this week’s Top Downloads results show airing on Wednesday, April 1, 2009. David Cook will perform Come Back To Me, the latest single off of his self-titled debut album.

This is David Cook’s first return visit to the American Idol stage since being crowned winner of American Idol Season 7, in the midst of Cook’s headline tour that started February 13th and venue locations have been sold out, with David Cook fans anxious to see their past Idol favorite.

Also performing on the same night of American Idol’s Top Downloads is Lady GaGa, singing her hit single Poker Face. Lady Gaga’s debut album entitled “The Fame” was released in 2008, and the hit single “Just Dance” received Grammy attention for Best Dance Recording.

Top 9 Theme Spoiler! Ryan Seacrest announced on his radio show the American Idol theme for the Top 9 Idol contestants will be “TOP DOWNLOADS“. On Tuesday night, March 31, 2009 the Top 9 American Idol finalists will apparently be singing songs from the iTunes downloads/iTunes Top 100 downloads for song choice.

Top Downloads on iTunes, eh? Well, I sure hope Megan Joy carefully considers the variety of songs included in the Top 100 downloads when deciding what song she’ll sing, because her last performance was one of the worst thus far.

Joss Stone and Smokey Robinson sang “You’re The One For Me” on the American Idol Motown results show on Thursday, March 26th and we’ve got the YouTube Video! Smokey Robinson and Joss Stone debuted “You’re The One For Me” from Smokey’s album entitled, “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun”, tentatively scheduled for release in May 2009.

Watching 69-year-old Smokey Robinson sing a love song to soon-to-be 22-year-old Joss Stone (born Jocelyn Eve Stoker on April 11, 1987) seemed a bit strange to some Idol viewers, but I thought the performance was beautiful. Maybe some viewers didn’t like the performance because they lack chemistry, but Smokey’s voice is still amazingly smooth and beautiful to listen to, with or without Joss Stone or other female singers Smokey has performed with.

A bit about Smokey Robinson’s biography: Smokey Robinson, born William “Smokey” Robinson, Jr. on February 19, 1940, is one of the primary key figures associated with Motown Records, second only to the company’s founder, Berry Gordy. Smokey Robinson earned the title “King of Motown” due to his countless hit songs and contribution to the Motown record label. English soul singer Joss Stone came to fame in late 2003 with her multi-platinum debut album, “The Soul Sessions“. Joss Stone songs and albums have sold over ten million copies worldwide, winning one Grammy Award and two BRIT Awards. In 2005, Stone and Melissa Ethridge did an incredible tribute to Janis Joplin during the 2005 Grammy Awards singing “Piece of My Heart” that brought the house down, and was considered to be one the highlights of the Awards show that year.

The American Idol Lip Sync controversy is heating up, with news from the New York Times that the American Idol group performances are nothing but lip-syncing of the worst kind. Watching American Idol contestants perform those abysmal group performances is bad enough, but to learn that American Idol Season 8 contestants are having to lip-sync songs while (obviously) struggling with Idol choreography doesn’t sit well with Idol fans.

Manfred Westphal, a spokesman for FremantleMedia North America (which produces American Idol for FOX) initially denied the Idol group performances were lip-synched by saying, “The Idols don’t lip-sync, period”.

Then we hear the lip-syncing controversy is true! “Due to extensive choreography and to balance their voices with open mikes against a screaming audience, the Idols do sing along to their own prerecorded vocal track during the group performances only”, says Westphal.

Screaming audience? Maybe screaming “Please Stop Lip-Synching the crappy group performances!” The American Idol group performances haven’t been anything to write home about and now we know why! They’re lip-synched, and it’s got to be the worst case of lip-synching we’ve seen in years.

Westphal said the contestants’ solo performances never use any recorded music or vocals, although the contestants do record their weekly song choice before the performance competition so that it will be ready for release on iTunes after the show.

Past American Idol contestant, Justin Guarini, created a firestorm of Idol controversy last week when he said, “Every single year we can’t stand the group performances. I know they can’t stand it either. And I think what makes them even worse now is that they’re lip-synched. They’re really prerecorded now.”

Guarini also said he doesn’t blame American Idol producers for having Idol contestants lip-sync group performances. “I know they are interested in making the best show possible and in caring for the contestants’ voices. It’s almost torture to watch the contestants sing and dance like they don’t have a care in the world when in fact they’re sweating bullets” over who will be voted off during the elimination results show.
