Ellen DeGeneres American Idol New Judge and Paula Abdul Replacement

Ellen DeGeneres New American Idol JudgeEllen DeGeneres American Idol’s new fourth judge and stepping in as the Paula Abdul replacement? WTH? FOX announced that Ellen DeGeneres, the mega-talented comedian and talk-show host with twenty plus years as a music industry producer big-wig…errrrr, sorry about that…will be the new 4th judge on American Idol. Ellen DeGeneres is an amazing comedian, one of the funniest comedy acts around, but an American Idol Judge??? Why? My guess is the bottom line…ratings.

Is having Ellen as a judge on Idol a good plan? Will you still watch American Idol with Ellen as the new judge? Did FOX screw up big-time choosing Ellen as a judge and you don’t plan on watching when Season 9 starts?

Here is the new American Idol Judge announcement, straight from FOX:

“Emmy Award winning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has joined AMERICAN IDOL as a fourth judge. DeGeneres will sit alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi and offer her own unique perspective to the contestants throughout the competition.

The ninth season of AMERICAN IDOL premieres January 2010 on FOX. DeGeneres will join the judges’ panel after the auditions, which will feature appearances by guest judges Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain.

“I’m thrilled to be the new judge on AMERICAN IDOL,” said DeGeneres. ”I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.”

“I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the AMERICAN IDOL family,” said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. “Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and her understanding of the American public will bring her own unique human touch to our judging panel. I can’t wait for this next season to begin.”

“We’re all delighted to have Ellen join our ninth season of AMERICAN IDOL,” said executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz. “Beyond her incredible sense of humor and love of music, she brings with her an immense warmth and compassion that is almost palpable. She is one of America’s foremost entertainers, and we cannot wait to have her join our team.”

Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment for FOX added, “We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres join the AMERICAN IDOL judges’ table this season. She is truly one of America’s funniest people and a fantastic performer who understands what it’s like to stand up in front of audiences and entertain them every day. We feel that her vast entertainment experience – combined with her quick wit and passion for music – will add a fresh new energy to the show.”

American Idol fans are perplexed and internet reactions are mixed, of course. American Idol fan and popular blogger MJ Santilli at mjsbigblog.com took the words right out of my mouth when she wrote, “I mean, really? Ellen DeGeneres?” She guest judged ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ last season, and her critiques were comic relief. So is she going to be a real judge or some kind of joke? She’s a comedian, not a singer or a musician. I’m kinda flummoxed here.” No kidding!

Ellen DeGeneres is the new Paula Abdul replacement. Hmm, who would have guessed this one?! Ellen will join the Idol judges’ panel after the Season 9 American Idol Auditions are completed. Featured guest judges include Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain. The 9th season of American Idol premieres January 2010.

What a complete joke. Ellen Degeneres? Are you f***king serious????? Just another way to plug a little more PR through her show. She is by the worst possible choice for that panel, they would have been better off with Ugly Betty or Billy Bob Thornton. I have watched this show for years and now that will come to a cease. Good call American Idol. Way to make a possible network suicide. I for one will no longer be watching this program as I am far to dissapointed for words.

don’t you think there are some unemployed people with musical talent to judge? I agree that it must be for ratings. I think they made huge mistake.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Ellen but she is a comedian and just because she can dance so what!
I don’t want to call her greedy….but Ellen, there are people that would love a job, and if you’re representing America’s vote….then why not the new judge be a “regular” person w/no celebrity?

This has to be a joke! Who wants all their career hopes and dreams decided by a comedian who knows little, if anything, about vocal skills? Ugh! This is just too much! I won’t be watching American Idol until Ellen deGeneris is gone.

Ellen may not have the kind of background that Paula has,but she is a super person and I think will do a great job. Love the show, and will miss Paula, I will keep watching.

I have been a loyal viewer since the second season, but will not be watching this year. The news of Ellens selection as the new judge has done it for me. I am tired of certain lifestyles being pushed on us. This was one of the few shows I enjoyed watching with my children. Ellen has no experience in the industry and is in no way qualified to be a judge.

Ellen? That’a a mistake. I saw her commenting on AI the other night… Like a deer in the headlights, just tossing out blah comments with no meaningful criticism.

I have nothing personal against her but come on… If you’re going for some laughs, how about someone like Queen Latifah? Funny, but has some music background to bring to the game. Hey, where’s Weird Al?
Just get someone that knows something about the industry besides having “a passion toward music”. I’m pretty sure that the majority of people on this planet have a thing for music. That’s a lame reason if, that is, the motive behind bringing her on.
Let me be clear… Ellen… I wish you well. However, I don’t think you’re qualified.
