Simon Cowell Leaving American Idol – Paula Abdul Leaving American Idol Too
Rumors about Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul leaving American Idol have been swirling around the internet for awhile now. Now it appears the rumors are true. Simon Cowell, 49, is leaving American Idol next year and Paula Abdul is leaving American Idol too. Sharp-tongued American Idol judge, Simon Cowell, told the Daily Mirror in 2007 that by the time he turns 50 in 2010 the public would be sick of him anyway and he’d be quitting American Idol.
Simon Cowell, who is also a judge on UK’s X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent (BGT), told the Mirror’s Alun Palmer in the 2007 interview: “There has to come a point when I will step down from being on camera and remain behind the scenes because you can’t keep doing this forever. I have three more seasons under contract with American Idol and that will be it. And it will probably come at the same time in the UK. I am contracted for another two or three seasons in Britain and I think by that point the public will be sick to death of me anyway and it will be time to go.”
In a recent interview with the British newspaper, Simon Cowell says his reasons for leaving American Idol are due to his grueling and hectic schedule, and that he cannot keep up with the hectic workload much longer.
“But there is a point where I am not sure we can keep this schedule up. It takes longer and longer to make these shows because you have to put more into them, and I am not sure we can sustain me doing three shows a year, with the record label and the TV production company.
“Most people do one show a year and I do three and they involve a lot of travelling. One may have to go. I don’t know which one. That is the problem, I like all of them. I can’t imagine not doing Britain’s Got Talent and I can’t imagine not doing X Factor. But I guess America is more likely to go because I have got one year under contract. Maybe that will be the end.”
Simon Cowell even told Extra that he’d be leaving after American Idol’s 10th season because, “I’ll have done 10 series and your time’s up. It’s time then to do something new. I think it’s time to bring in new people … Ten years is a long time.” When asked who he’d choose to replace him, Simon said, “Donald Trump.”
No offense to Donald Trump, but I sure hope Simon was joking about Trump being his replacement as celebrity judge on American Idol. I don’t always agree with the way Simon Cowell verbalizes his criticisms of Idol contestants and performances (tact is not in Simon’s vocabulary at all), but sour-pus Trump is probably the last man on earth that Idol fans would accept as a replacement for Cowell on American Idol.
Paula Abdul Leaving American Idol
Rumors about Paula Abdul leaving American Idol have also been circulating the net for quite awhile now, leading many Idol fans to wonder, Is Paula Abdul leaving American Idol? OK! Magazine said in November 2008 that Paula is leaving the show.
“According to a source close to the reality judge, Paula, 45, who has been with the show for seven years, is developing new TV projects and is hoping to “transition” out of the Fox hit.
With her fellow judge, Randy Jackson, telling friends that American Idol has lost its magic, another Paula insider explains, “She knows that every season could be her last. Now she’s got a new secret venture that she’s really excited about.”
In February 2009, OK! Magazine interviewed Paula Abdul again about her plans to leave American Idol this year, after Season 8 is concluded.
“It is the last season of my contract, and I have so many other things I want to do. There are only so many hours in the day.”
In that same interview, Paula Abdul also talked about Idol judge Kara DioGuardi coming in as a 4th judge on American Idol saying:
“Kara and I have known each other for years and we get along great. But we tried four judges before and it doesn’t work. It takes up so much time for each of us to give our opinion that it slows down the pace.”
Considering how upset American Idol fans and Adam Lambert fans were when Idol ran several minutes late, cutting off home recordings of Adam Lambert’s ‘Mad World’ performance, I have to agree that having 4 judges is just too many. Kara DioGuardi was apparently upset about Paula’s comments about having four American Idol judges and how the pace is slowed down, and even though Paula’s comment is a true statement, I don’t put the blame or responsibility of the show running late on one judge over another.
What do you think about Simon Cowell leaving American Idol? Will you continue to watch American Idol after Simon leaves? Are you happy or sad that Paula Abdul is leaving American Idol? Would you watch Idol if Donald Trump were to become Simon’s replacement?

are you dumb or something?? i wouldnt watch the show without paula. and she has never confirmed shes gonna leave. she loves the show so much that Im sure she wants to continue, simon or no simon. its all about the kids for her! i mean… havent you seen her lately? does it seem to you like she isnt enjoying the show?
Paula had a rough time in 2008 but its Way better now. I cannot imagine her Not renewing her contract. and fox has even said its all up to her. she wasnt happy in season 7 but now she seems much happier, with the show and just everything.
simon- cheap publicity trick. I dont believe for a second he has any plans to quit, I just think he wants more money
It really doesn’t matter if Simon and Paula leave. The show has finally sealed it’s doom. American Idol should be a show to pick the best consistent singer/performer. That did not happen this year. Instead it is a cheesy little show about voting for the worse talent who might make it big. I think that people voted for Kris Allen after Danny and Allison got the boot because they hated Adam. Is that what this show should be based on. I have a real hard time with that. Please don’t tell me that Kris Allen was consisten, he was not. He was not even the most popular. Kris is a nice and kind of cute. But, there is nothing unique that makes him a star or Idol like. Kara did nothing for the show. Even though Kara looked better in her bikini, she looked ridiculous trying to upstage the young bikini girl. Now, I find it hard to take her seriously as a judge. She can’t sing and should not have tried. Anyway, American Idol has totally lost its spark.
Paula wants to stay, Idol wants her to stay, but they haven’t offered her more money, which is what she wants. The auditions start Aug, 6th, so hopefully soon, they’ll propose a contract. As for Simon, his contract isn’t up till next year and the producers are already offering him almost double his current salary.
Rachel, I’ve been reading lots of reports online about whether or not Simon and/or Paula is leaving the show. I heard that Ryan Seacrest received a huge pay raise for 5 more years, so hopefully deals can be made amicably for everyone else. I’ve also read reports that say Simon is sticking around for another year, but haven’t seen anything concrete that proves he will stay after season nine. There are also online polls asking people if they will continue watching Idol if Simon leaves and the majority say No, they won’t. As for Paula, I hope she gets the contract she wants and will stay on American Idol for as many years as the show runs.
Simon really makes the show because he is honest with his opinion unstead of talking in circles with flowery words. We all agree with him, he is just brutal enough to say it! As far as Paula, although she is flaky, she is crucial as a judge. The mix of Randy, Simon and Paula makes for a good show. They need to lose Kara who brings nothing to the show as far as I am concerned. I don’t like her and her personality does nothing for the show.
Four judges IS too many because it slows the show down. I’d hate to see any one of the judges leave as they all bring their own unique flare to the show and after all these years we are used to them. The voting rules should be changed (though I have no clue how it should be done)to make it reflect talent over “cute” Just my thouhts!
I will not be watching American Idol if you let Ellen be a judge. She absolutely has no qualifications for this position. You are ruining the chances for a lot of these kids to find their dream. There has got to be only one reason your ‘alternative’ department would want her on; to push the ‘homosexual agenda’. I’m not interested in watching, even though I’ve always supported Idol. I am asking all my friends and acquaintances not to watch. This is for teenagers; she is not a good example for any teenager.
