American Idol 4/7/09 Theme: “Songs From The Year You Were Born” Idol Theme Next Week
What is American Idol’s theme next week? The American Idol theme for April 7 will be Songs From The Year You Were Born, according to American Idol judge Paula Abdul. In a radio interview this morning on the Phoenix KISS radio station John Jay and Rich show, Paula Abdul revealed that next week’s Idol theme will be all about music from the 80’s, and a tiny bit from the early 90’s.
Since next week’s theme is “songs from the year you were born”, the songs we’ll be hearing on American Idol next week will range from 1980 to 1992, with a bunch of songs between 1984-1986.
Here is a breakdown list of the Top 9 Idol finalists as it stands right now, in order of their birthdates:
Songs From The Year You Were Born:
- Danny Gokey – April 24, 1980
- Adam Lambert – January 29, 1982

- Megan Corkrey – August 5, 1985
- Anoop Desai – December 20, 1986
- Allison Iraheta – April 27, 1992
In the radio interview, Paula Abdul said the Miley Cyrus and David Cook (pre-taped) performances are scheduled to air on tonight’s results show, and that Lady Gaga will perform on tonight’s show as well. An American Idol rep says next week’s theme will be officially announced tonight on the April 7th American Idol Results Show.

Okay, so I’m sure others have ideas for Adam Lambert’s song (from 1982) but here are my suggestions.1) I love rock n roll: Joan jett & the blackhearts; easy to update and in Adam’s ilk ie gothish; 2) Hurts so good: Johnny Cougar: No comment necessary
Danny could do Love on the Rocks: Neil Diamond or maybe Hungry Heart (Springsteen)or You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling (Hall & Oates did a cover). Or even Woman – John Lennon (risky).
Lil could do Here comes the Rain Again: The Eurythmics; Time After Time; Cyndi Lauper.
Will work on more later.
Sasha
More for Lil. Anything from Tina Turner’s Private Dancer Album. I like “I can’t stand the rain”, “Private Dancer” and “What’s love got to do with it”.
Adam. Ray Parker Jnr “I’m in love with the other woman”, Soft Cell “Tainted love”; Rod Stewart did a version of “Hot Legs” with Tina Turner in ‘82.
Kris. “Heaven”, Bryan Adams; “One more night”, Phil Collins; “Broken Wings:, Mr Mister;
Matt. “Lonely ol’ night”, John Cougar; Mellencamp, “Careless Whisper”, George Michael; “Freedom”, Wham; “Mony Mony”, Billy Idol
Matt: “We close our eyes”, Go West; “Would I lie to you”, Eurythmics; “Addicted to Love”, Robert Palmer
Anoop:” “Mean to me”. Crowded House; “You can call me Al”, Paul Simon
Danny: “While you see a chance”, Steve Winwood
Adam: “The one thing”, INX
Alison: “Come as you are”, Nirvana; “Damn, I wish I was your lover”, Sophie Hawkins; “I have nothing”, Whitney Houston
Hi Sasha, these are all good suggestions for all the finalists. I can hardly wait to see what they actually choose to sing. FOX and AI work real hard to keep the song choices secret, but if I learn anything about what they’ve actually chosen to sing, I’ll let everything know with a spoiler alert.
SImon and PUL Abdul, please save Lil Rounds she is the the best Singer maybe the choices of Songs for Lil is Chanka Khan respect or the rock disco song Amazed suprieme by Robbie William.
Baby one more time or michael Jackson the blood on the dancefloor ALive by S Club 7 theme seeing Double staright from the heart it all coming back to me now by Celine Dion theme song is Because you love me please save Lil round
I think that adam should sing under pressure by queen. He would kill it and it so relates to the problems that people are experiencing now.
Hi Sassy. I love that song too. Problem is, it was released in 1981 and Adam was born in 1982 – so it’s out of scope for the purposes of this competition if they apply it strictly. However, it was a hit in 1982 – so perhaps it is in scope?
I was wondering if anyone is having the same problem I am with viewing Adam Lambert’s performances on americanidol.com/videos. This is the second day of not being able to view any of his performances. It will go to everyone but him.
Hi Sassy,
I don’t have any problem viewing some of the Adam Lambert videos on the AI site, but I get frustrated trying to show the YouTube videos of Idol performances because FOX (or someone) won’t allow them to stay loaded on sites like this one. I post some of the American Idol performances from YouTube, then it seems the next day visitors try to watch the performances but they won’t load up anymore. Darn it! I’m not sure why you’re having problems viewing the videos, but I’m working on a different way of posting videos here on American Idol Fan Site so they aren’t blocked or interrupted by Fox etc.
Oh, I forgot to add that you don’t have to put anything into the “url” box when leaving a comment or question. That is only for people with a website or blog url, so don’t worry about trying to put something in there.
Anoopi: Anoopi has the ability to really have a moment with either of these songs. He definitely has the vocals for them both. “Take My Breathe Away” or “Say You, Say Me”
Kris: I would love to see what Kris would do with “There Must Be An Angel” by the Eurythmics
Scott: “Voices Carry” by Til’ Tuesday
Adam: I think he could take a chance and change it up from last week with “Open Arms”. Mariah Carrey did a more recent version of it.
There were so many great songs from the 80’s that I can hardly wait to see what each contestant will sing. I wish the song list would be published before the show for all of us that want to know, but I can understand why FOX would be hesitant to do so.
Many people are speculating/suggesting/recommending that Adam Lambert sing a Journey song; which song from Journey Adam should sing doesn’t seem to matter to most Adam Lambert fans, since no matter what Adam sings he always goes above and beyond expectations.
I just hope all the Idol contestants choose something that matches their voices well, and also challenges them to really show all of us Idol watchers what they are capable of as singers.
How do the contestants choose their songs each week? Is there a limited list in which to choose from? I always here the contestants talk about the “luck of the draw”.
I’m really not sure Sassy. I’ve heard contestants say something about the “luck of the draw” also, and I can only assume it means there is a list given to the contestants that is within the framework of the night’s show. Like Adam Lambert may be given a list of songs from the year he was born and has to choose a song from that list. If other contestants were born during the same year, I don’t think they can sing the same song on the same night. Maybe Ryan Seacrest will explain how that works on Tuesday or Wednesday night this week.
I thought that the contestants struggled tonight. Adam did an amazing job as always, but he needs to be sure to give credit where credit is do. If I’m not mistaken, this arrangement of Mad World Adam sung tonight was first performed by Gary Jules or is Gary Jules part of the band Tears for Fear?
Hi Sassy,
I was somewhat disappointed in tonight’s Idol performances myself. Overall…, the performances were just “okay”. Adam Lambert of course kicked butt with Mad World. I do believe that Gary Jules version came later and that Tears for Fears came first. I may be mistaken about that, but I really don’t think so.
Yes, idol fan. Gary Jules came out with this softer version two decade later after Tears for Fear released it in 1982. Whoever did the arrangement, Adam still has the ability to make it his own. Is there any doubt that Adam is in a league of his owm. He always makes great song choices that show his unique versatility. He can blow it out one week and then reign it in and do something so unexpected. Yet adam shows such an inate ability to choose the right songs week after week. Do we know what the theme for next week is yet? I’ve given up trying to suggest songs for him. He just has the it factor.
I haven’t gotten wind of next week’s theme yet but when I do, you’ll all be the first to know!
The poll I have running on the sidebar is really getting a lot of attention and most are voting for Adam Lambert to win American Idol.
Does any one know what the theme for next week is yet?
I don’t think that any of the other contestant don’t even compare to his level of performance. If he doesn’t get a recording deal out of this it will be the greatest injustice of all time in american idol history.
oh yeah, he also looked amazing and as Paula says he marries fashion with his rock edge. His look tonight is my favorite!
Very poor planning on the producers part last night. Muzzle Paula.
I know that alot of talk on other sites has surrounded the fact that Adam didn’t give credit for the arrangement to Gary Jules, but don’t forget that they barely gave him time to sing the song much less comment on it! I’m currious if AI will comment on the current controversy of their poor producing.
Sassy,
We’ve got our American Idol Results Show – Who got voted off American Idol published and ready for all you Idol fans!
I am really surprised that the judges used the save on Matt. But as Simon explained 2 will go home next week. With the theme being disco, I think that Alison will struggle. We’ve already seen that Adam can deliver this style of song. I also think Lil could surprise us.
